Remember the peek-a-boo games you played with your infant? He placed his hands over his face, thinking he was well hidden; then you would ask, Wheres Johnny? He laughed and remove his hands, then youd reply with, There you are!
Little Johnny loved those hide and seek games you played. As he got a little older, he probably hid behind a chair, door, or cabinet while you moved from room to room, calling his name. You had a good idea where to find him, because he couldnt stay quiet from the excitement of the moment.
My husband was the first born in a family of six children. The youngest child was three years old when we married. She was the only girl, and well protected by the whole family.
Ill never forget a phone call we received with a panic stricken voice on the other end. We learned that because of some discipline, she had threatened to run away. Mom wasnt too concerned with the threat until they couldnt find her anywhere. They had searched the whole house and called her name but she did not answer the call. They made a street search in the neighborhood, but to no avail. Finally, in desperation, they called the police. After an exhaustive search, they found her curled up behind a chair sound asleep.
When sin entered the earth through Adam and Eve, they hid in shame, from the presence of God. As any loving parent would, he went seeking them, calling their name. Genesis 3:9 And the Lord, God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? KJV
God already knew where to find them, so why did he ask them where they were? I believe he wanted them to realize where they were in relation to their spiritual condition. They had disobeyed and must pay the consequences.
Once sin entered in, they were suddenly aware of their nakedness before the Lord. All their sin was before him. How painful the separation must have been. They could no longer walk with God in the Garden. Although they sinned, God showed mercy mixed with discipline, love and forgiveness.
Where are you? Are you free to walk before the Lord, or are you hiding in sin?
